Náměšť nad Oslavou - Home to musical tradition

This monumental castle demonstrates the influence of Renaissance architecture in Moravia. There is an arcaded courtyard, a richly decorated castle chapel and a library with Baroque frescoes and stuccowork. It is a place with a significant history of culture and education and a living tradition of interesting cultural events and festivals.

Náměšť nad Oslavou, built on a rocky massif on the left bank of the Oslava river, is one of the most significant examples of Renaissance architecture in Moravia. The original castle of the 13th century was rebuilt by the Moravian lords of Zierotín in the years 1565-1578 into a Renaissance residence, preserved almost unchanged to this day. The interiors on the second floor of the castle offer a unique exhibition of tapestries, valuable paintings and historic furniture. The castle chapel is notable for its design and Baroque furnishings. The library is unique, with a rich selection of books under a stucco vault with unique frescoes. The inner courtyard decorated with Renaissance arcades is also worth noting. In 2013 a second tour route was made accessible - the private apartments of Haugwitz family, who owned it in the 19th and 20th century. The so-called Italian Court in front of the castle, an English park, and a small French garden are part of the castle grounds. In the period of Heinrich Wilhelm III Haugwitz the castle became a remarkable center of musical life within Central Europe, with performances by Salieri and Gluck. The current management of the castle administration continues this tradition even today with regular classical music concerts.
